On a cold, windy, and rainy day in late October, two women and five men showed the world what kind of mental toughness and drive the Clemson University Triathlon Team has. In the Half, Heather Chenette finished in 15th with a time of 5:26:21, and Leah McMillion took 23rd with a time 5:31:00 out of 274 entrants. In the men’s half, Michael “Magic” Mauhar led the way with a 5:21:15 in 98th, followed by James Hyde (5:35:54, 155th) and Michael Edge (6:10:12, 317th) of 544 competitors. In the main event, the B2B Full, Ben Murphy and Justin Arnosky showed off their Iron chops for the second time this year (Murphy’s first at IM Louisville, Arnosky’s at Avia Vineman in Windsor, CA). Aided by an ocean tide current, Arnosky was 5th out of the water with a blistering 39:06 2.4-miles swim, with Murphy putting up a respectable 48:03 as well. After a long and flat bike, the men hit the two-loop marathon through downtown Wilmington, joining the other Half-Tigers on the course. Arnosky put up his PR for the Iron distance with an outstanding 9:47:00, putting him in 15th overall. Murphy rounded out the Tigers finishing as the daylight faded with a very respectable 11:27:54, finishing in 121st of 525 entrants.

The following day, club president Nick Sykes raced the Miami 70.3 down in Florida. After a brief rain delay, stormy swim, and blustery bike, Nick bested his 2010 run split by 15 minutes in 1:35 to walk away with a new PR by 28 seconds (5:04:26, 9th 20-24 AG)

Tigers Represent at Augusta 70.3, SC Half & Sprint, Hickory Knob

http://www.clemsontriclub.com/1/post/2011/10/tigers-represent-at-augusta-703-sc-halfsprint-hickory-knob.html

http://www.clemsontriclub.com/1/post/2011/10/tigers-represent-at-augusta-703-sc-halfsprint-hickory-knob.html#comments

Uncategorized

While the Tri Tigers competed at Tugaloo, two members stepped up their long course game in a big way as they journeyed to Augusta, Georgia to compete in the Augusta 70.3 Half Ironman. Thomas brought home the overall win in the Sprint, taking the lead out of the water and never looking back (1:08:52). Edge posted a 1:20:06, earning him a 9th-place finish. Ms. Lauer, an up and coming member of the triathlon team, completed her first ever triathlon and finished in 19th (1:40:12) with a consistent performance in the swim bike and run. Arnosky took the Tiger kit the distance and raced the Half. After leading out of the water (27:25), the competition proved to be strong on the bike, and Arnosky ran his way to a 5th place finish, aided by a strong 1:26 half marathon, for a cumulative time of 4:30:54.

Jackie Lauer also completed her second triathlon of the season a few weeks later, at the Hickory Knob Sprint, taking the age group win and 16th overall (1:19:08).

Tigers Roll at Conference Championships at Rev3 Anderson

http://www.clemsontriclub.com/1/post/2011/10/tigers-roll-at-conference-championships-at-rev3-anderson.html

http://www.clemsontriclub.com/1/post/2011/10/tigers-roll-at-conference-championships-at-rev3-anderson.html#comments

Uncategorized

The Collegiate racing season concluded for Clemson at a virtual home game, racing at Rev3 Anderson just a short drive from the Clemson campus. Justin's collegiate leading 1500m swim split of 22:04 gave him a lead he would not relinquish over the 42k bike and 10k run course. Tim Sattler followed Justin home just 61 seconds later to take 2nd in the collegiate race and 4th overall. Tim used a collegiate leading 10k run split of 37:52 to separate himself from the rest of the field.

Brady Thomas also put together a strong race to place 4th in the collegiate division with a time of 2:18:23. Michael "Magic" Mauhar rounded out the Tigers' scoring quartet placing 8th collegiate in a time of 2:20:48. Michael Edge (15th, 2:35:16), Nick Pryzybyl (18th, 2:47:42), and James Hyde (20th, 2:53:58) also finished strong for the team.

Team President Nick Sykes was the 8th and final finisher on the men's side for the Tigers. On his way to a solid performance, Nick was hit by a truck 20 miles into the bike leg. After getting bandaged up, fixing a flat tire, and waiting for a state trooper to sort things out, he continued the race a full hour and 31 minutes after the accident. Coming into T2 dead last in the race, Nick proceeded to run the 3rd fastest 10k of the race, and 2nd collegiate behind only Tim, in a time of 38:01. Strangely enough, that made his run pace faster than his average bike pace.

The women also shared in the team's success, led by Vice-President Heather Chenette. Heather's 2nd fastest collegiate bike split, coupled with solid swim and run splits, brought her to the finish in 2:38:50. Leah McMillion followed closely behind in 2:41:28 and secured her collegiate podium spot with a strong run. Kara Phillips used a 3rd best collegiate bike split to take 5th place in 2:49:49 while Roxanne Kyriakakis and Holly Hirsch had a friendly battle over 8th and 9th place, finishing in times of 2:53:15 and 2:54:00, respectively. Kristin Bender rounded out the women's squad in her first ever triathlon, finishing in a time of 3:10:14!!!

A complete list of results and top-3 collegiate splits, can be found on our "Team Race Results" page here.

Tri Tigers roll at Rocketman!

http://www.clemsontriclub.com/1/post/2011/08/tri-tigers-roll-at-rocketman.html

http://www.clemsontriclub.com/1/post/2011/08/tri-tigers-roll-at-rocketman.html#comments

Uncategorized

The Clemson Triathlon Team headed to Huntsville, AL this weekend for the first Olympic distance conference race of the season. Close behind in his second Olympic race in two weeks, was Carl Eichert, running himself onto the collegiate podium for the first time. New recruit, Timothy Sattler also cracked the top 5 in the collegiate division with a time of 2:11:51.

Brady Thomas, Nathan Weaver, and Michael Mauhar came across the line in 2:16:49, 2:17:20, and 2:18:37 respectively; good enough for 11th, 12th, and 13th in a very deep collegiate race. Team President Nick Sykes rounded out the men's team with a hard-fought 2:24:44 for 18th place collegiate, also racing for the second straight weekend.

On the women's side, the tale was a culmination of hard training for Leah McMillion who won a Collegiate race for the first time (on her birthday, no less!) with a finish time of 2:35:17. With that time, Leah also placed 3rd overall in the women's race! Backing her up, Roxanne Kyriakakis and Holly Hirsch both excelled in their very first Olympic distance races, placing 5th and 6th in the collegiate category. With times of 2:48:54 and 2:49:15, respectively, every finisher for the Tigers completed the distance under 2 hours and 50 minutes while all 7 men were able to go under 2 hours and 25 minutes!

Overall, it was a great weekend for the Tri Tigers and bodes very well for things to come! We'd like to thank the especially hospitable members of the Rocket Tri Club in Huntsville, for hosting many of the collegiate teams for the weekend.
